Hag Stone Necklace

Even though we live on a farm, we also enjoy walking the beach in search of Hag Stones over on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

We return each year to a place that is called Nokomis / Casey Key that is well known for its fossil beds. We beach comb for hours in search of these treasured stones that are prehistoric limestone / bedrock that have been tumbled in the waves to create one of a kind shapes and with luck, a naturally occurring hole that goes all the way through the stone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock, most of which originally formed by the accumulation of sediments rich in carbonate minerals, like calcite, underwater. These sediments, which were turned to limestone rock over millions of years after they were laid down, are composed of over 50 percent carbonate minerals.

Hag Stone or Witches Stones have been used for centuries as protection amulets and are said to ward off nightmares, sickness and used for healing.

Farmers, sailors and healers would string the stone with a leather cord and either wear them or suspend them over the doorways and/or windows to keep the evil and sickness out.

These hag stones have been individually hand selected during low tides and each are one of a kind in shape, color and texture.  Each stone is blessed with a light rubbing of our raw beeswax to give it a bit of natural shine. The cords are real leather that have been well rubbed with our all natural beeswax leather conditioner to soften and strengthen. Most of the cords are quite long and we prefer to allow them to rest on the breast bone but you may alter the size and shorten it as you like. The cords are tied with a simple knot to allow you to adjust or customize the design.  You may change out the cord and use a more personal necklace to add the stone to and they look lovely on a simple thin sterling box or link chain. If you prefer a cotton or hemp cord instead of leather, please message us or leave us a note with your order.

Those that do include a chain, it is a quality solid stainless steel and measures 19.1/2 inches end to end.

Because these stones are naturally porous, you may add a drop or two of your own essential oil to use it as an aromatherapy amulet. Natural non metal materials are a safer choice for aromatherapy jewelry when used against the skin.  Apply essential oil and rub with your thumb pad on all sides of the stone and even along the leather cord.  The EO's will last a bit longer if you prep the stones with a beeswax product such as a salve or balm.

Hag stones work for protection, can be used in aromatherapy AND can be utilized as "Soothing Stone”. This is where you rub the stone between your thumb and first finger in a rhythmic motion to help sooth, concentrate, focus and relax the mind. This is very useful during stressful times.

These are very hardy stones and have been around a very long time and can withstand constant use and handling. Additionally, they can be cleansed daily with a mild plant based soap and worn in the bath or shower.

We hope that you will enjoy these historical stones as much as we do!
